What is Tulsi (Holy Basil)?

Tulsi, known as Holy Basil, is one of the most sacred plants in India, considered "The Queen of Herbs" for its regenerative and spiritual properties.

As Tulsi traveled west along early trade routes from Asia to Europe, Christians became familiar with it as "holy basil," and it was included in legends, offerings, and worship rituals.

Tulsi, a member of the Lamiaceae family, is native to tropical Asia and has become a cultivated plant. It is an erect, multi-branched shrub, about 30 to 60 cm tall, with opposite green or purple leaves, a strong aroma, and hairy stems. The leaves are oval, up to 4 cm long, with slightly serrated edges. The flowers are slightly purple, tiny, and arranged in terminal clusters.

In the ancient Vedic text Bhagavata Purana, she is mentioned as the plant incarnation of Lakshmi, wife of Vishnu and the goddess of wealth and generosity. Tulsi is seen as a living gateway between heaven and earth and is considered the manifestation of the divine within the plant kingdom.

There are said to be 108 varieties of Tulsi. Each variety has a slightly different appearance, taste, and smell. Organic India uses the three Tulsi varieties with the greatest adaptogenic potential, rich in antioxidants and immune system boosters: Rama Tulsi (Ocimum Sanctum), Vana Tulsi (Ocimum Gratissimum), and Krishna Tulsi (Ocimum Sanctum).
